Good afternoon,

Please find below our first e-zine which is copied to all current and lapsed members for whom we have an e-mail address. Copies will be delivered by hand to those members we don't have an e-mail address for. Enjoy.

MAILS FROM THE RIVERBANK

Welcome to the first of what we hope will become many editions of this electronic newsletter for AMRA members. Please let us have your thoughts about it and ideas for future editions.

Cycle hazard

Where the cycle path from Wilsham Road joins with North Quay, there have been a number of very close incidents involving cyclists riding straight out into the road. Thus far, providence has prevented an accident. Until we can get the council to install a suitable barrier, which we are informed will be in only a matter of a few weeks; will all drivers please take particular care when in this area? Well done to John & June Napper who helped the AMRA campaign to persuade the Vale to undertake this work.

Flood map revision

Thanks to pressure from Viv Boorman, the Environment Agency has been able to make some beneficial adjustments to the flood map at North Quay/Fisherman’s Wharf. The change will be published on the internet on 25th June and all residents affected should receive a newsletter from the EA before this. Many thanks Viv.

Garden guerrillas

A dozen or so of our neighbours did some hard work tidying up the communal areas around the marina about 7 weeks ago and we are sure you will all have noticed the improvement in visual amenity. Thank you to those who toiled on everyone’s behalf.

Marina in Bloom

I’m sure many of you have noticed the increased activity around the gardens in the area as people commence their efforts to become a winner of our first Marina in Bloom competition – there are 2 prizes best garden and best container display garden. Judging will take place on Sunday 5th July for West Quay, South Quay, Marina Way and Lambrick Way, while North Quay and Fisherman’s Wharf will be judged on Thursday 9th July.  If these dates don’t suit you, please let Sue Dixon know on 528466. Please join in and help to improve the general amenity of this fantastic area.

E-mail addresses

While this edition has been sent to all AMRA members, the intention is that future editions will only be sent by e-mail. Please, if you didn’t receive your copy by e-mail, can we have your e-mail address/es and even if you did, if you wish us to send it to another member in the same household, may we have their e-mail address too? I’m sure we can manage to hand deliver to a limited number of members who genuinely don’t have or need to have an e-mail address. See below under the “Title” section for the e-mail address/postal address to send this information to.

Your comments are welcome

As this is a 1st edition we know there will be shortcomings in many areas; please tell us what they are and what you would like to see in future editions and what you’d rather not. We need your help to ensure this new method of communication hits as many of your requirements as possible. Thank you.

Title

Good, terrible, indifferent? Give us your ideas for the title – by e-mail please to enemb@btinternet.com or “snail mail” to Neil Boston @ 12 North Quay and our panel will reward the sender of the best suggestion with a little gift at the AMRA Summer Soiree being held at the Abingdon School Boat House on 19th July commencing at 17.00. We may even use it for future editions – please note all suggestions remain the property of AMRA and the decision of the judging panel is final.

Summer Soirée

Our main event of the year will be on Sunday 19th July at the Abingdon School Boathouse commencing at 5 p.m. As usual, this event is free for members, while the guest fee is £10. This year, we are providing a complimentary Pimm’s or non-alcoholic welcome drink. To enable Sue Dixon and her army of helpers to get the catering arrangements right, please let her know that you are going on 528466. Finally, please don’t forget to bring a bottle (or more if you are thirsty).

Subscriptions

Our membership tally is already very encouraging this year thanks to Daphne Peile’s charm (and persistence)! However, she intends to break the record and would like those of you who’ve overlooked joining this year to sign up now. Remember, you get the value of your subscription back immediately by attending the Summer Soirée.

Our website www.amra.org.uk

In the attachment, you will see just one reason why you should visit our website. This photograph, taken by a nephew of Antonya Cooper’s is just one of many wonderful shots in the picture gallery section. Please visit and let us know what else you would like to see there.

Thank you

To all those who helped to put this launch edition together; without you it would still be at the conceptual stage.

Vacancy

We need an editor to take on the challenge of regularly publishing our AMRA e-zine. Is it you, or would you like to help with production or writing articles? Please let me know how you can help: enemb@btinternet.com
